第三部分 阅读理解(共17小题;每小题2分,满分34分)

第一节:选择题

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项.

A

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.

By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power”.

Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal(日志) of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.

Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.

Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

56.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Way on How to Write.

B. Increase Your Brain Power Through Writing.

C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing.

D. How to Start Your Writing.

57.According to the passage, writing can help you a lot EXCEPT_______.

A. to increase your brain power.

B. to improve the ability to remember.

C. to develop your interest in study.

D. to strengthen the understanding of a topic.

58.The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fourth paragraph means that______.

A. you are already successful .

B. there’s a long way for you to go to reach your goal.

C. you are left wondering what to do .

D. you have been on the way to success.

59.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Writing can cure people of their brain disease.

B. People who can keep all thoughts in mind are more likely to succeed.

C. Writing a book about one topic is the only way to understand it.

D. The more you write, the more logical you will be.

B

“It was all his own idea,” says Pat Peters, the 38-year-old wife of Palo Alto California high school football coach Bob Peters. 39 Bob had just drawn up a "motherhood contract" — a document (文件) stating that for 70 days this summer he would take over the care and feeding of the couple's four children, plus all household chores (杂务) . Although he didn't even know how to make coffee when he signed, he was quite confident. (He thought the experience would make a nice book.)

After 40 of the 70 days, he was ready to give up. "I was beaten down, completely humbled,"admits Peters. Three weeks later he spoke to the local press (also part of the bargain), stating," Not only is motherhood a difficult task, not only is it never-ending, it is an impossible job for any normal human being."

Bob and Pat were high school sweethearts. After they got married in 1960, she worked as a secretary to help put iron through university. Since then Bob has been the football and wrestling coach at Palo Alto's Cubberley High while Pat raised the kids.

Then two years ago Pat went back to work as a secretary at Cubberley. "I had been around children so much," she sighs (叹气) . “I couldn't talk to a grown-up.” She continued to run the household, however, until Bob signed the contract, whereupon she decided to relax and enjoy it. Although Peters had consulted with his school's home economics teachers and the head of the cafeteria (食堂) , his meals were sometimes a disaster. "I tried to slip the butter I'd forgotten under the eggs after they were frying," he says. For the last three weeks, the family ate out a lot— sometimes having Macdonald's hamburgers for lunch and dinner.

As for housekeeping, a home economics teacher had told Bob that a room always looks clean if the bed is made. "I found an easier way—I shut the doors," he says. Soon the kids were wearing the same clothes for a week. "I made them wear their shirts inside out, and when we went to pick up Pat at work they turned them right side out so they would look clean."

Now that Bob has publicly admitted he was wrong, he is routinely ( 日常地) sharing the child-raising and household tasks with Pat, The tentative (暂定的) title of his book about the summer is taken from something he shouted at the kids one day .

60. The couple signed the contract because______

A. Pat complained a lot about her doing the housework all by herself

B. Bob loved taking care of children and wanted his wife to have a good rest

C. they agreed that husband and wife should share household tasks

D. Bob thought it easy to take care of the family and wanted the experience for a book

61. It was agreed that if Bob failed to keep to the contract, he would have to ______

A. pay a certain amount of money B. do all the housework for years

C. say sorry to his wife D. admit publicly he was wrong about motherhood

62. What can we learn about Pat Peters'?

A. She was hard-working and selfless.

B. She was pretty and kind-hearted.

C. She was tired of the child-raising and household tasks.

D. She did not love Bob any longer.

63. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Bob managed to keep the kids' clothes clean.

B. Bob tried to cook good meals for his children.

C. Bob frequently took the kids out to eat because he was too busy at work.

D. Bob taught the kids to make their beds every day.

64. Which of the following can best end the story?

A. "My experience of being a mother."

B. “I’m proud of you all, my dear!"

C. "Wait till your mother gets home!"

D “ Motherhood: an impossible job for anyone."

C

One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than allowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology (精神药理学) has proved what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything. Researchers found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a decline of hormone (荷尔蒙) and shuts down the immune (免疫的) system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by literally forcing yourself to be positive (faking it, so to speak), it will become contagious (会传播的) and the positive thoughts will generate nice little chemicals and good feelings which will reinforce the positive thoughts.

For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you don't feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can generate thoughts, but thoughts can also generate feelings. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our lives. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career objectives than your own attitude.

It's often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And in the office of militant (好战) negativism, the positive workers shine like gold. You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy. This vital key to success is totally within your control. Use it.

65. We can infer from the passage that .

A. positive thinking can cure you of your diseases

B. positive thinking can easily be generated by anyone

C. a decline of hormone may cause you to be depressed

D. a specific chemical reaction is the cause of negative thinking

66. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Feeling and thoughts can generate each other.

B. It's easier to control thoughts than to control feelings.

C. Your success depends wholly on your attitude.

D. Keeping smiling will surely make you successful.

67. Just like a one-eyed man in the land of the blind, you should .

A. take positive attitude in the office of militant negativism

B. be king in your office

C. pay no attention to what is going on around you

D. control your feeling to what is happening to you

68. The best title to the passage is .

A. Thinking Benefits People B. Why Should People Think

C. Positive Thinking and Negative Thinking D. Thinking: The Vital Way

D

A rise in the earth’s temperature could lead to an increase in the number of insects worldwide, with potentially serious consequence for humans.

A new study shows that insect species living in warmer areas are more likely to undergo (经历)rapid population growth because they have higher metabolic(新陈代谢的) rates and reproduce more frequently. The finding has scientists concerned that global warming could give rise to more fast-growing insect population and that we could see it in the number of six-legged insects.

The consequence could be more serious than just a few extra bug(昆虫) bites each summer . “If they’re crop species, we could count on needing to use more insect-killers and it could be very costly,” said Melanie Frazier, a doctoral student at the University of Washington. Insect-borne diseases are also a worry. Malaria)疟疾), L’yme Disease and a host of others rely on insects to spread among humans, and an increase in their populations could mean more infections.

Already, scientists have observed malarial zones with new cases appearing in areas unaffected before. The change is thought to be due to rising temperatures and an expansion of areas habitable for mosquitoes. The new research shows rising temperatures would mean insects would not only spread out, but also multiply(繁衍) more quickly.

Still, Frazier says it’s too soon to predict which species will adapt and which might even face extinction(灭绝). She looked at 65 insect species and found a correlation(依存关系) between warm climates and population growth across the board—but, she warned, the scientists have no way of predicting which species will eventually adapt to new, warmer areas. We won’t have to wait long to find out. Insects adapt quickly, so we will likely see changes within our lifetime.

69.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Serious diseases are related to global warming.

B.Global warming may increase insect population.

C.Some insect species may be gone for ever.

D.Many insect species will have to adapt to new environment.

70.The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph probably refers to______.

A.the rise in the earth’s temperature

B.the high metabolic rates of insects

C.the fast growth of the insect population

D.the number of the insects

71.The fast-growing insect population will worry the farmers because_______.

A.some diseases will spread faster than before

B.they may suffer from bug bites each summer

C.the production cost may increase

D.some new diseases will appear

72.We can learn from the passage that______.

A.humans have started the fight against global warming

B.malaria hasn’t been found in new areas

C.the increasing population of insects won’t cause more infections

D.scientists can find out which insect species will adapt to warmer areas in the near future

第二节 简答题(共3小题, 满分6分)

阅读下面短文,根据第73至第75小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

A landmark agreement on non-stop cross-strait charter flights for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holidays will see Taiwan business people working on the mainland and their families fly directly to and from Taipei and Kaohsiung for the first time in over 50 years. However, while the flights will be nonstop, they will still have to go through Hong Kong airspace .

With the agreement, the planes that will carry mainland-based Taiwan business people home and back will start to take off on January 29, with a total of 48 round-trip charter flights continuing through to February 20.

Considered to be a breakthrough in cross-strait relations and a step toward the end of the ban imposed on direct air links in 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded , the agreement signed this year has three advantages over the charter flights for mainland-based Taiwan business people allowed in 2003.

First, it is the first time that two-way and nonstop charter flights are allowed across the Taiwan Strait in 56 years, with six airlines from both Taiwan and the mainland involved . In 2003, only Taiwan airlines were allowed to be engaged in the charter flights .

Second, it is also the first time that the charter flights will go directly to Taiwan without stopping in Hong Kong. By comparison in 2003, the charter flights were not allowed to fly directly between Taiwan and the mainland. Instead, they had to make stops at a third destination, usually Hong Kong or Macao stretching a one-hour flight to about four hours .

Third, the charter flights this year will connect Taipei and Kaohsiung with Beijing , Shanghai and Guangzhou , among which , Kaohsiung , Beijing and Guangzhou were not on the list of charter flights in 2003.

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “ direct” .

74. How do the chart flights go?回答词数不超过8个词)。

75. What is the best title of the article?

Certain animals and plants develop characteristics that help them deal with their environments better than others of their kind. This natural biological process is called adaptation. Among the superior characteristics developed through adaptation are those that may help in getting food or shelter, in providing protection, and in producing and protecting the young. That results in the evolution(进化) of more and more organisms(生物体) that are better fitted to their environments.

Each living thing is adapted to its way of life in a general way, but each is adapted especially to its own special class. A plant, for example, depends on its roots to fix itself firmly and to absorb water and inorganic chemicals. It depends upon its green leaves for using the sun’s energy to make food from inorganic chemicals. These are general adaptations, common to most plants. In addition, there are special adaptations that only certain kinds of plants have.

Many animals have adaptations that help them escape from their enemies. Some insects are hidden by their body color or shape, and many look like a leaf or a little branch. The coats of deer are colored to mix with the surroundings. Many animals have the ability to remain completely still when an enemy is near.

Organisms have a great variety of ways of adapting. They may adapt in their structure, function, and genetics, in their development and production of the young, and in other aspects. An organism may create its own environment, as do warm-blooded mammals(哺乳动物), which have the ability to adjust(调整) body heat exactly to maintain their ideal temperature despite changing weather. Usually adaptations are an advantage, but sometimes an organism is so well adapted to a particular environment that if conditions change, it finds it difficult or impossible to readapt to the new conditions.

Boys and girls:

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can rid of them correctly and wisely. First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks. It’s unnecessary and it’s not important at all. We needn’t care about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates. Facing this, we can find a proper time to have a heart—to—heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open—minded and friendly will do you good. Third, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination. Last, some of us don’t have much pocket money, so they feel unhappy. Isn’t it strange? So long as we have some, that’s enough. And we can learn to spend money!

That’s all. Thank you.
