Wrens are tiny birds with long tails. Blue-coloured wrens are found all over Australia but the superb blue wren is common only in eastern Australia. "Superb" is certainly a suitable name for the male blue wren. The female, however, is rather plain except for her orange-brown legs, her beak and the feathers around her eyes.

Blue wrens usually live in family groups. At first sight, a group might appear to have only one male and many female wrens. This is because the younger males, which have black beaks, do not develop blue feathers until their first breeding season. After this, males keep their blue plumage.

All members of the family feed the nestlings for the first twelve to thirteen days after they hatch and before they leave the nest. In some seasons one pair may nest and raise three separate broods.

Blue wrens are lively, friendly birds that hop hurriedly about in their search for insects. They are often seen in gardens but do not like to venture too far into the open.

60. The superb blue wren gets its name from its ________.

A. friendly nature B. breeding cycle

C. attractive appearance D. feeding habits

61. When do male blue wrens develop blue feathers?

A. after the first nestlings hatch B. during their first breeding season

C. while they are raising their brood D. when they are nestlings

C

TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu's nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is already entering the country's drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. Without urgent help, the country's days are numbered.

But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20--50 cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark's Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year. Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu's rising sea level is also caused by global warming.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century;scientists expect it to rise by extra 1--3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川) melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10--25 cm in the last 100 years.

The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.

Should this come true, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with "climate refugees" looking for somewhere to live.

64. The author uses Tuvalu and Venice as examples in Order to explain _______.

A. they are the first place sinking into the sea

B. they are both sinking into the mud where they stand

C. they will disappear in the future completely

D. their trouble is caused by global warming

65. Put the following events in the right order.

c. The greenhouse effect is growing.

d. The earth is getting warmer and warmer.

e. The sea level is rising.

f. More CO2 is produced.

g. Many places are sinking into the sea.

A. d, f, b, e, a, e, g B. b, f, c, d, e, a, g

C. f, e, b, d, a, e, g D. b, f, c, d, a, e, g

66. What does "climate refugees" in the last paragragh mean?

A. People who are forced away from their homeland by climate.

B. Climate changes.

C. Rare animals.

D. Climate effect.

67. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Tuvalu's nine little islands are less than five meters above the sea level.

B. The average global temperature has risen by 1--3 centigrade degrees over the past 100 years.

C. The warmer temperature causes the sea level to rise.

D. There will be huge climate changes unless the warming is stopped.

Middle school students combine science and imagination as they celebrate National Engineers Week in a Future City Competition.

In the African city of Mwinda, floating farms are quite common. The city's residents move around in hydrogen-powered hover(盘旋的) vehicles, and renewable energy resources provide the city's power. That's how Jake Bowers, 12, Emily Ponti, 14, and Krisha Sherburne, 12, imagined their future city.

The students, who attend St. Thomas More School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, took first place for their design last week in the 2007 National Engineers Week Future City Competition held in Washington D. C. The students won a trip to the US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

Kids from 35 middle schools across the country went to Washington. They had teamed up with teachers and volunteer engineer mentors(顾问) to develop cities. Each team began by creating a fictional city on Sim City 3000, a computer game that allows players to construct towns. The students then built a tabletop model of the city, wrote an essay and presented their creation to the judges. This year's theme asked students to design fuel cell powered communities. Fuel cell technology works by using hydrogen and oxygen to produce power. The process is environmentally friendly.

Organizers hope the competition provides a fun and educational way to spark young people's interest in engineering. "As the number of graduates in engineering decreases , it's ever more important to encourage students to build these skills at an early age," says John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company. Shell is a sponsor of the annual Future City contest. Judging by this year's competition, plenty of kids are getting the message. Some 30,000 students from more than 1,000 schools participated in the 2006--2007 Future City Competition.

68. What is not imagined in the three teenagers' mind for their future city?

A. Hydrogen-powered hover vehicles.

B. The city's power provided by renewable energy resources.

C. Floating farms.

D. Oxygen-powered floating factories.

69. Which statement is true according to the passage?

A. St. Thomas More School in Baton Rouge is in Alabama.

B. The 2007 National Engineers Week Future City Competition was held in Louisiana.

C. The students who took first place for their design won a trip to US Space Camp in Huntsville.

D. The US Space Camp lies in Washington D. C.

70. Kids from 35 middle schools _________.

A. could use computers to help them construct their future cities

B. created a real city on Sim City 3000

C. teamed up on their own to develop cities

D. built a tabletop model of the city and presented it to their teachers for judgment

71. It can be inferred that the 2006--2007 Future City Competition ________.

A. will spark young people's interest in living in Space Camp

B. will decrease the number of graduates in engineering

C. will encourage college students to build engineering skills after their graduation

D. was participated in by 30 students on average in each school

Daredevil climber Alain Robert, known as the French Spiderman, stood strong winds and rain to climb the world's tallest skyscraper, Taipei 101, Saturday.

Robert, dressed in red rain jacket, tights and climbing shoes, climbed up ropes hung down the side of the 101 storey, 1,667-foot office tower, reaching the top in around four hours. "It was a very big moment and I felt a lot of satisfaction though I was so tired and nearly all of my muscles were painful. I felt completely eased." said Robert after taking the ride down in one of the tower's lifts, the world's fastest.

The 42-year-old Frenchman has covered scores of well-known structures around the world including the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower——without permission or any safety equipment or ropes.

This time Robert was wearing a harness (背带) fastened to safety ropes for the entire climb. He used the ropes to pull himself up most of the way, using his hands and feet to climb up the walls for only short sections.
