阅读下列短文,从每题中所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

While others look away from trouble, this lady digs in and gets to work.

Gretchen Buchenholz, the native New Yorker and mother of six, has worked on behalf of needy and marginalized families for years in the city. She does everything from buying groceries for homeless families to start schools for children. In 1974 she founded Merricat’s Castle, a nursery school that opened its doors to kids of all racial and economic backgrounds, the able-bodied as well as those with disabilities or terminal illnesses.

She founded the Association to Benefit Children (ABC), the nonprofit group, some 20 years ago. The story of how she started ABC is pretty amazing. In 1984 she was on her way to a government office to get a day-care permit when, by accident, she entered a room where homeless families were waiting to be placed in a “ welfare hotel.” She saw three bare cribs with babies lying in them. The children wore no diapers (their parents couldn’t afford them), and the room was filthy. After talking to the parents and learning they and their children were hungry, Gretchen marched out and bought bread, peanut butter, apple juice and diapers. Then she started making phone calls. She dialed the American Red Cross, City Hall and The New York Times.

Gretchen has made many people see that we need to recognize these children are not different from our own, and we need to join in and help. Too often, people look away from suffering. But she sets us an example that we should gain strength to do something about it.

D. we should do our bits to help those poor children

58. The children wore no diapers because______.

A. they had no parents

B. their parents were waiting for the government’s help

C. their parents had no money to buy diapers

A. called up City Hall to get help for those homeless people

B. moved to New York at a young age

C. treats the children equally whether they are normal or disabled

D. starts schools for those homeless children

Glynis Davis:

I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the mew year… but it didn’t happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I’d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old bag of fish and chips didn’t make any difference---but the scales don’t lie.

Roz Juma:

To be honest, I never weigh myself any more. I’ve learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a super thin body. This is obviously the size I’m meant to be and, most of all, I’m happy with it.

Lesley Codwin:

I was very happy at winning Young Slimmer of the year. I’d look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem—perhaps from then on I didn’t pay any attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though. Because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.

Ros Langfod:

Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Every so often I try to go on a diet… I’m really good in a few days, then end up having the children’s leftovers or eating happily chocolate—my weakness. I’d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

60. What do you think the four women were talking about?

A. Their own slimming matter. B. Their life after marriage.

C. Tex books for students. D. Different diets they prefer.

61. Where are these short passages most likely to be taken from?

A. Talks on the air. B. Advertisements on the wall.

C. Books in a library. D. Magazines for children.

62. What does the underlined word “scales” possibly mean?

A. The coach in the slimming club. B. Some tool to measure weight.

C. Glynis Davis’ dear husband. D. The salesperson in a food shop.

63. Which of the following best describes each of the four women’s attitudes towards slimming?

① Glynis Davis a. I put on weight soon after I got married.

② Roz Juma b. Frame doesn’t necessarily mean success.

③ Lesley Codwin c. Facts speak much louder than words.

④ Ros Langfod d. I like myself as I am, and to be what you are.

A. ①-a; ②-d; ③-b; ④-c B. ①-c; ②-b; ③-d; ④-a

C. ①-c; ②-d; ③-b; ④-a D. ①-a; ②-b; ③-c; ④-d

We all hate speed cameras, don’t we? They’re not there to slow drivers down and lower the road accidents; they just make money for the government. They trick us, cost us cold hard cash, disturb us from driving properly and are unfair.

Well, here’s a surprising thing: what if there were facts that the boring cameras actually saved lives? It’s a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at what’s happening in France, a country with a historically poor record of road safety.

There were 16617 road deaths in 1972 in France, for example, but that dropped to 8412 by 1995 following rules such as compulsory seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995.

Last year, the road deaths dropped below 5000 for the first time, or 4.9 percent less than 2004, comparing road deaths to population in 2005,that’s about 817 per million people compared with Australia’s 806.

And guess what? Last year the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years.

Okay, you know the arguments regarding increased traffic safety and cameras-for-income, but it seems in France there’s been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A three-hour, wine-soaked lunch with a quick rush back to the office is no longer on.

Traveling on the highways, it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130km/h speed limits when once few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are coming. There’s even an official web site listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly.

Maybe it is because of such transparency by government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy la joi de vivre thanks to speed cameras.

64. Generally, it seems to most people that speed cameras are used to _______.

A. make money for the government B. slow down the traffic

C. lower the road accidents D. help us drive properly

65. From the passage we can learn that______.

A. France has a very poor record of road safety now

B. we’d better ignore the evidence that speed cameras save lives

C. France had less road deaths than Australia in 2005

D. France does successfully in controlling road accidents

66. Which seems more effective in lowering road deaths in France according to this passage?

A. Compulsory seat belt. B. Lowering blood alcohol limit.

C. Placing more speed cameras D. Eating in a shorter time.

67. What does the underlined word “concealment” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Secrecy. B. Openness. C. Strictness. D. Harmony

D

It’s a safe bet that a robot made your car and made your computer. Pretty soon, they could be making your bed and breakfast too.

Increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to move out of research departments and into your home. Companies including Sony and General Electric are working on designs for small robots. Products like the Roomba, a robot that can clean floors, are flying off the shelves.

What’s behind this new robot revolution? It’s partly a matter of technology. Devices that can recognize and respond to a human voice have been developed. There are now a few different ways for robots to move around. They can walk, crawl or ride on wheels. Robots are being made smaller and smaller. They are also becoming more and more energy efficient.

A bigger part of the story is on the demand side. From the day the television remote control was invented, people around the world have searched for new ways to be lazy. Take into consideration that more and more people can afford robots, and the time seems ripe to introduce robots to the average family.

To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still a long way off. However, robots that do basic housework such as cleaning or gardening are sure to come out soon. One thing is certain---when these robots do come to our homes, it will change things forever.

68. According to the passage, robots can do the following things EXCEPT________.

A. cleaning floors B. making cars

C. talking like people D. making computers

69.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Smaller robots are less energy efficient.

B. Roomba has been out of date

C. People will become lazier than before.

D. People’s demand contributes to new robots

70. The underlined part in the 2nd paragraph probably means________.

A. new robots will soon come into people’s homes.

B. new robots can fly by themselves .

C. robot products are cheaper and cheaper

D. new robots have more functions than old ones

71. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Robots will soon be on sale B. Robots are in great demand

C. Robots are coming into our families. D. Robots help us a lot

There are good Santas(Father Christmas)and bad Santas. The good Santas all realize one thing: In the mind of a child,Santa Claus is perfect. That’s a lot of pressure. And so many people from around the world attend the Charles Howard School in Midland,Mich. The school offers a three-day,40-hour course for Santas hoping to achieve excellence. The graduates can get a diploma in the art of Santa.

There’s a real range to what Santas earn, from big reindeer(驯鹿)for large events to no pay for charities . One thing that makes them come here is a pure love for children, and very few jobs are respected by a shopping center full of children like Santas.

“The very first time I did Santa,I was attracted,’’ said one of the students. “ I would have done it without money. I mean,I just love it.”

A former Macy’s Santa named Chales Howard founded the Michigan School in 1937 with the belief that being St. Nick demands so much more than a belly and beard. ‘‘A lot of commercial institutes will think if you have a suit, you think you’re a Santa, it’s more than that.” said Tom, the school’s present dean. Tom is Santa’s training director.“Santa Claus can be a religious figure,”Tom said. “He can also be a non-religious figure. He’s a man who stands for all good things.”

The schoo1 teaches every thing from breathing techniques for Christmas songs to the subtleties(细微之处) of beard keeping. There are lessons in child psychology, body language and even media training for talk-show appearances and call-in shows. Santas a1so need to make sure they know a11 the names of the reindeer and how to deal with children. What is harder to deal with, however, is children who ask for Christmas gifts like bringing daddy home or making mommy happy again.

72.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

B. The on1y thing to be a Santa is to have a belly and beard.

Being not far from the sea, London is famous for its fogs. The worst of them happened on December 4, 1952. All movement in the town came to stop. It was almost impossible to drive or ride in anything. The streets which led into the center were filled with cars and buses that moved two miles an hour. Soon, however, the traffic was stopped. Being left by their passengers, the buses stood empty in the streets. Many who usually traveled by bus took underground. But there were so many people there that the gates had to be closed. Being caught in the fog, people felt their way along the walls of houses with one hand, while they put out the other in front of them so as not to knock against something or somebody.

It was a terrible fog, indeed, and as many as 4,000 people in London lost their lives.

One possible version :

As we know, there are advantages , and disadvantages with everything . The invention of the calculator had brought advantage to us , but now students of teenagers in schools use calculators too frequently , which has let to bad effect . They calculate things with calculators more and work their mind less . As a result , they become low in calculating or even can’t calculate well . A survey by the expert shows that the calculating ability of teenagers in schools has obviously decreased compared with that of those ten years ago .In addition , as school students , we are young enough to do many things by ourselves . We must work our mind as much as we can , and constant calculating in mind will train our quick response .

So in our opinion , we school students had better seldom or not use calculators .

W:You still have an hour to wait , so relax .

M:Relax ? How can I when I’m so anxious about the interview ?

Text 2

W:Oh, no . It’s six o’clock already and I still haven’t finished my work .

M:Don’t worry. The clock is half an hour fast . You still have plenty of time to do it .

Text 3

W:Did you want to see me , sir ?

M:Yes, I’d like you to do some preparation for tomorrow’s meeting .

Text 4

M:We thought we’d all go out for lunch today . Would you like to go with us ?

M:All right . Can you be there at one o’clock ?

W:Here you are . I really hope you can do something about it .

M:Well ,maybe I can have a try .

M:Hello, Mary. Why are you standing out here in the cold wind ?

W:I’m waiting for a bus , but the buses are very full at this time of the day .

M:Where are you going ? This isn’t your way home . You must take a bus from the other side of the street to go home .

W:But I’m not going home now . I’m going for a walk in the park .

M:Going for a walk at this time in such cold weather ?

W:I always like to go for a walk before supper .

M:I see . Then why are you going by bus ? Why not go to the park on foot ? It isn’t very far from here .

W:Oh , no , Bill , it isn’t very interesting to walk through the street. In fact , it’s very boring . So I always take a No. 3 bus to go to the park .

Text 7

M:Death valley ! But that’s desert . Wasn’t’ much too hot for camping ?

W:No, not really . It gets hot during the day , but it cools off very quickly at night .

M:Well, did you enjoy the trip ?

W:Yes, very much . The desert is nicer than you thought . You really should go and see it some time .

M:I want one , newer but not too expensive .

W:What about this one ? It looks nice and works well .

M:How about 850 dollars ?

W:You have to add 50 dollars . That’s the best we can do , OK ?

M:OK. I’ll take it .

Ted worked in a factory , but he was not a very good worker , and he lost his job one day , His wife looked in the newspaper and said , “One of the banks wants a guard.”

“I’m going to go there tomorrow,” Ted said , “and I’m going to ask for that job . It’s quite an easy one , and I’m quite strong .”

The next morning he went to the bank at half past nine and said, “I want the job here . The guard’s job .”

A man gave him a piece of paper . There were a lot of questions on it . “Write your answers under the questions.” The man said to Ted .

One of the questions was , “Have you ever been in prison ?”

Ted smiled happily and wrote “No” under this question .

Then he looked at the next question . It was “Why?”

He thought for a long time and then he wrote , “Because the police have never caught me.”
