She was born to wealth and power in an era when money and politics were left to the men. Later, as The Washington Post's publisher, Katharine Graham became one of America's most powerful women.

Despite a privileged background, Katharine had to deal, while growing up, with the high demands her mother placed on her children. Katharine's love of journalism, which she shared with her father, led to her career after college at The Washington Post, the newspaper her father bought in 1933.At the Post, Katharine met Phil Graham, a young, charming lawyer who became her husband. When, in 1945, Katharine's father chose Phil over her to take over his struggling paper, Katharine didn't object and stayed at home as a wife and mother of four.

While Phil's successful efforts to restore the Post to prominence made the Grahams popular members of the Washington social scene, Katharine privately suffered tremendous pain from her husband's increasingly abusive behavior and wild mood swings caused by severe depression. When Phil committed suicide (自杀), the 46-year-old Katharine found herself thrown into a new job, that of newspaper publisher. But determined to save the family paper for her children, Katharine rose to the challenge of running the Post, attending meetings in every department, working endlessly to prove herself to her critics, and becoming the toast of Washington.

In 1971, Katharine ordered the Post to print a copy of the Pentagon Papers, the top-secret documents revealing the truth about the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. What's more, her courageous decision and support for her journalists prepared the Post to break the most important political story in modern history: Watergate (水门事件), one of the greatest scandals (丑闻) in American political history. An Australian-based scientist announced yesterday he had made a step forward in forensic (用于法庭的) DNA testing so that an individual can be identified by a single cell.

Ian Findlay, from the Australian Genome Research Facility at the University of Queensland, said current DNA testing required 200 to 500 cells to gain a similar level of accuracy. "What we have done has brought that down to one cell," Dr Findlay said after releasing details of his DNA testing technique at a Sydney conference.

The technology could allow investigators to pick up DNA identifies from plastic cards and even build up a complete history of the people who have handled a paper document.

"You'd have to wear a space suit to stop yourself from leaving traces. You can identify cells on the paper, so you can work out where it's come from and who's touched it,” he said.

The technique could also be used to trace the thrower of a punch from cells left behind on the skin of their victim. Even the wearing of latex gloves would not help: small cells can pass through the gloves, and the constant flow of genetic material given off by the human body would leave further evidence.

"We gained a skin cell from a document dating back 30 years and managed to gain a DNA fingerprint. DNA evidence can remain fresh for decades, perhaps even centuries," Dr Findlay said. "The potential for this technology to solve unsolved crimes is great, "he said.

But Dr Findlay, named scientist of the year in 1998 by the European Society of Human Genetics, said the new testing needed to be scientifically validated, which would take up to five years.

He said, "There are serious consequences taking on technologies too early. The public has to be sure that they have the utmost confidence in the security and court systems."

61.The main advantage of the new technology is that __________.

A.a single cell can identify an individual

B.it has brought down the cost of DNA testing

C.a higher level of accuracy can be acquired with a single cell

D.it needs less than 200 cells to gain a certain level of accuracy

62.The underlined word" validated" means _________.

A.confirmed B.imagined

C.supposed D.criticized

63.According to Ian Findlay, the new technology can ________.

A.help to keep DNA evidence fresh for decades and even centuries

B.make the process of DNA testing much more simplified

C.help to pick up DNA identities more easily

D.be widely used in five years at most

64.The last paragraph suggests that __________.

A.the immediate adopting of the technology may cause mistakes

B.the public have acknowledged the new testing technology

C.it is safe to put the new technology into use now

D.Dr Findlay is quite sure of his new technology

65.The aim of the passage is to _________.

A new research has uncovered that culture is a determining factor when interpreting facial emotions (情感). The study reveals that in cultures where emotional control is the standard, such as Japan, focus is placed on the eyes to interpret emotions. Whereas in cultures where emotion is openly expressed, such as the United States, the focus is on the mouth to interpret emotion.

"These findings go against the popular theory that the facial expressions of basic emotions can be universally recognized,” said University of Alberta researcher Dr. Takahiko Masuda. "A person's culture plays a very strong role in determining how they will read emotions and needs to be considered when interpreting facial expression."

These cultural differences are even noticeable in computer emoticons (情感符号), which are used to convey a writer's emotions over email and text messaging. The Japanese emoticons for happiness and sadness vary in terms of how the eyes are drawn, while American emoticons vary with the direction of the mouth. In the United States the emoticons :) and :-) show a happy face, whereas the emoticons : ( or : -( show a sad face. However, Japanese tend to use the symbol ( ‘ ‘ ) to indicate a happy face, and ( ;_; )to indicate a sad face.

"We think it is quite interesting and appropriate that a culture tends to mask its emotions. The Japanese would focus on a person's eyes when determining emotion, as eyes tend to be quite subtle (微妙的)," said Masuda. "In the United States, where open emotion is quite common, it makes sense to focus on the mouth, which is the most expressive feature on a person's face."

66.The text mainly tells us that __________.

A.cultural differences are expressed in emotions

B.culture is the key to interpreting facial emotions

C.different emoticons are preferred in different cultures

D.people from different cultures express emotions differently

67.Which emoticon is used by Americans to show a happy face?

68.If a Japanese wants to detect whether a smile is true or false, he will probably ________.

A.read the whole face

B.focus on the mouth

C.look into the eyes

D.judge by the voice

69.People used to believe that ___________.

A.some facial expressions of emotions were too complex to be recognized

B.people in the world interpreted basic emotions in different ways

C.people could only recognize the facial expressions of basic emotions

D.people all over the world understood basic emotions in the same way

70.The computer emoticons used by the Americans show that _________.

A.they express their feelings openly

B.they tend to control their emotions

C.they are good at conveying their emotions

D.they use simpler emoticons to show their feelings

D

Someone asked me this week if I thought we really can have" it all". My immediate answer was "of course", but after thinking it over, I concluded that it depends on a lot of things. In my opinion, the answer of whether or not you can have" it all' has to vary from person to person because we are all so different, and everyone has a differing definition (定义) of" it all". In fact, I believe that even the same individual's definition of"' it all" varies over their life. Most babies believe they have" it all' when they are in the aims of their mommy enjoying a good meal. That's all it takes! But, as that baby matures, their definitions become more complex, and finding" it all" becomes increasingly a private matter.

I have learned a lot of important life lessons during my search to have "it all". It began in Junior High School, when to have" it all" meant having my own room, getting HBO ,and being on the "A” volleyball team at school. And, yes, I achieved those goals and had " it all". At least for a little while. Because the first lesson I learned about having" it all" is that as soon as you get" it all", you want more!

In High School, I thought I only needed one thing to have "it all". I wanted so badly to be a member of the Madrigal Singers, a famous choir sponsored by our school. I finally worked up the nerve to audition (试唱), despite the fact that no one had ever told me I had a special singing talent or that my voice was unique. At least, until my audition, when the director of the choir had no problem telling me how LITTLE talent I had! When I didn't make the choir, I learned that if my definition of having" it all" means having something that isn't a god-given gift, I will always be defeated. If, however, I choose to pursue goals that fit with the talents I have, the chance to have" it all" is unlimited!

71.What is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.How we can have" it all".

B.Everyone has a differing definition of'' it all".

C.The author's own experience in having" it all".

D.Whether we can have" it all" depends on a lot of things.

72.What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A.People just can't get satisfaction from having" it all".

B.People can have "it all" only when all the goals are met.

C.It is hard to get a permanent sense of having" it all".

D.It is easy for the young to get a feeling of having "it all".

73.By his experience of audition for the choir, the author intends to tell us _______.

A.one shouldn't be discouraged if one fails in having "it an"

B.having" it all" can't go beyond one's own talents

C.one's chance of having" it all" is unlimited

D.having" it all" is just a beautiful fantasy

74.The author believes that _________.

A.the same person always has the same definition of having" it all"

B.different people have a different definition of having" it all"

C.not all people can have" it all"

D.having" it all" takes great efforts

75.We can infer from the passage that ____________.

A.the author has had" it all" in his life

B.the author doesn't believe that people can have "it all"

C.tile author has a better idea of having" it all' than before

D.having "it all' doesn't have anything to do with one's age

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注重问题后的字数要求)

The mothers met while walking their beloved dogs in the local park, the Donald McDonald Reserve, several years ago and developed a friendship that began with small talk about their pets. This quickly turned to afternoon get – togethers where kids, dogs and grown – ups formed firm friendships.

Now the pair and their pets meet several times a week on the grass near Sandringham College, a place for a huge network of dog owners who have formed all kinds of friendships and a good old – fashioned sense of community. Dogs, as it seems, are good for your social life.

The combination of excited kids and dogs could be a recipe(处方) for disaster and the atmosphere on communal (群体的) walks is surprisingly harmonious. “There are some other people who don’t have kids who have started to meet us quite regularly,” Miller, a dog – owner, says. “The other day, there were seven dogs, five adults and six children all walking around the park together.”

Friendships formed through pets seem to cross cultural and age barriers and often involve helping when someone is sick or needs help caring for a pet. A woman says she’s answered several SOS calls from elderly people who have become ill suddenly and need a hand. “The friendships are such that you see these people every day and you get to know them… and they trust you with their pets and know they at the last minute,” she says.

The dog – owner says that, even as a child, she noticed how dogs could act as conversational ice – breakers for adults. Like people, dogs are also born social creatures. “Dogs need to get into the game and be dogs – they are pack animals,” she says.

76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

Failure Is The Mother of Success

We middle school students have had many tests or exams。We have achieved success

Suffered from failure。Different students take different attitudes to failure。

Some are in low spirits when they do not do well in the exams。They usually lose heart and no longer study as hard as before。But most students take an active attitude towards failure。They encourage themselves to be self-confident。They try to find out and analyze the causes so that they will no longer make similar mistake。

I agree with those with active attitudes。As we all know, failure is the mother of success。Even great persons have failed many times before success。So we must deal with our failure correctly。

W: You know, I read something about that. It turns out that a little cut on a finger can hurt a lot more than a big cut somewhere else.

M: Why? That doesn’t make any sense.

W: Actually, it does. A little cut like yours won’t damage the nerve endings. If they were damaged you’d feel less pain, but the wound could be more serious.

M: So I suppose I should be happy my finger hurts so much, right?

W: Right. Now go and get yourself a bandage.

W: Do you think that climate change is responsible for the recent floods?

M: It could be. There’re floods in this country almost every year, but in recent years they have been more widespread and more frequent.

W: It seems that the climate in this country is changing.

M: The summers are hotter. The last three summers have been the hottest for the past 200 years. There have also been stronger winds.

W: I think that the changing climate is a sign that we’re causing too much damage to the environment.

M: I think you’re right. Climate changes naturally over time, but I think that human activities are speeding up the change. I wish that governments would join together and try to resolve the problem.

W: Me too. If we don’t do something soon, it might be too late.

Now it’s News at Ten.

Country’s acid rain out of control

In 2003, acid rain did 110 billion yuan worth of damage in a total of 250 cities nationwide, China Daily reported on Monday. The two major causes are the rapid growth in the number of cars and the increased use of cheap coal as the country struggles to cope with energy shortage and meet power demand.

Red tide hits Shenzhen’s coast

Amassive red tide has washed up on the eastern coast of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province since September 1. So far, it has covered more than 15 square kilometers of water. According to the Shenzhen Ocean and Fishery Observation station, it is doing no harm to fish or the food industry. But people have been warned not to swim in this area.

More breathing space for pandas

The giant panda habitat in Sichuan Province has increased 70 percent over the last two decades to more than 17,000 square kilometers, according to the latest provincial forestry department study. Sichuan has 35 nature preserves, and 1,206 wild giant pandas, or 76 percent of China’s total. The number of wild giant pandas in the province is up 30 percent from the 1980’s.

Too much alcohol causes problems

About 35 percent of women surveyed by a Shanghai women’s hospital suffer from diseases caused by excessive drinking, China Daily reported last week. The hospital surveyed over 10,000 women, ranging in age 17 to 65. About half of them have a university education.

M: Hi, Sally. Welcome back. How was the west coast?

W: Excellent. It was really nice to get away from the city for a while.

M: What do you think of Los Angeles?

W: It is all right. I like it better than I thought I would. It’s very clean and spacious, and it’s got a lot of trees. But the bus service is terrible, and, of course, they don’t have a subway, so it’s a little difficult to get around. We had to rent a car.

M: And what did you see?

W: Oh, the usual things. We took a drive around Hollywood and looked at the stars’ homes, and then we went to Disneyland. We took all the rides and had lots of fun. I felt just like a kid again.

M: Was the weather good?

W: Oh, yeah. It was nice and warm.

(Text 10)

W: Good morning, Mr. Wilson. I’m from the New York Book Review. Could I ask you some questions about your latest book?

M: Sure. What would you like to know?

W: First, I’ve heard that your latest book is based on a true story.

M: That’s correct. It’ a murder mystery based on actual murders that took place in Florida several years ago. The main character, the policeman, is based on the man who looked into the case.

W: How do you research your books?

M: I always visit the places that I use as settings for stories. Readers like things to be as factually correct as possible, even in fiction! I usually base my characters on people I’ve met.

W: I really like your book. I’ve just finished this one. Congratulations on making the best-seller list yet again!

M: Thank you. Let me sign it for you … There you go.

W: Oh! Thank you very much. I heard you’re currently writing a collection of short stories. What are the stories about?

M: Many of them are short detective stories.

W: I’m sure it’ll sell well. Thank you for your time.
