A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some children -like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents-seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too.

Our mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to show to our friends. The world is not only hungry, it will also be thirsty for water. About 97% of water on the earth is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink or use the other 3%of the fresh water (淡水)which comes from rivers, lakes and underground. On the other hand, because the number of people in the world is becoming larger and larger, more and more fresh water is needed. So water shortage becomes a big problem.

How can we work out this problem? Scientists have found some ways to turn salt water into fresh water. One important way is to boil (使达到沸点)sea water with high heat until vapor (蒸汽)rises, leaving the salt. In this way, a lot of fresh water can be made quickly.

Today there are 6 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. This is a lot of people to feed. We need more food.

One way to produce more food is by growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic material (遗传物质). Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods (转基因食品), or GM foods.

By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice is being prepared (预备), for example, which stops people from becoming blind.

Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.

GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But, both rich and poor countries are very interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. In 2050 we may think differently about them.

You can shout or whistle(吹口哨)three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal(信号)given three times is a call for help.

They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.

If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with brahches(树枝). Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass.

I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late. I prefer to use an alarm clock(闹钟) to tell me what I should do. I have ten alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, if I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television programme, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but not why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone, but I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time.

More and more advertisements appear on the Web. You have to be careful not to be fooled or tricked(欺骗) by the advertisements on the Internet. Something is said to be a bargain(便宜物品), but it isn’t always cheap. And some so-called new things just have a new outside.

However, shopping online is a kind of fashionable(时尚的) thing today. I love to buy things of everyday use, so I often get lots of information about them on websites online. For example, if I want an MP3, I can choose my favourite one, and look for what the users like or don’t like about it, then decide whether to buy or not. We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people,

finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the

Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters

(called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way) BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud) IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common

abbreviations are:

info (information) puter (computer)

pic (picture) sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流) on the Net, so people have

new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

:-) (happy) ;-) (joking) :-( (sad) :-O (surprised)

These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:

(happy) (sad) (angry) (cool)

T

here are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board

or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the

person.

It takes time for people to get used to(适应) e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net

what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.
