Some people believe that international(国际的) sport brings about good will between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests(竞赛)encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments(争论), but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the terrible incident with the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined(毁了) by those incidents(事件) caused mainly by minor national contests.

One country received its second–place medal with great anger after the hockey(曲棍球)final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting(反对) to the final decisions. They were certain that one of their goals should not have been dismissed and that the opposite side’s victory was unfair. Their manager was angry when he said: “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Society are finished.” The president of the society said later that such words could result in the pause of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced(公布) that they would not give away first place to Russia, after a fighting end to their contest. The game had ended in quarrel. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player beat it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. The judges discussed the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then decided not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played for honour or money rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that sportsmen should compete(竞赛)as individuals(个人),or in non–national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages dangerous nationalism.

46. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have .

A. brought about goodwill between the nations

B. made only false national pride

C. hardly showed any international friendship

D. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

47. What did the manager mean by saying, “…Hockey and the International Hockey Society are finished”?

A. His team would no longer take part in international games.

B. Hockey and the society are both ruined by the unfair decisions.

C. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the society.

D. The society should be dismissed.

48. The author gives the two examples in paragraphs 2 and 3 to show .

A. how false national pride leads to undesirable incidents in international games

B. that sportsmen have been more troublesome than they used to be

C. that competitiveness in the games discourages international friendship

D. that unfair decisions are common in Olympic Games

49. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The American basketball team didn’t lose any game until this game.

B. In the hockey match, the Russian team won the American team.

C. The author favored the American basketball team

D. The author thought it right to encourage false internationalism.

50. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic games.

C. Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.

D. International contests lead to misunderstanding between nations.

Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. I’m not a bad person, I have just had a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed. My mom has told me again and again, “Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you continue to be rude, you will get into big trouble.”

It’s been a problem at school several times too, when teachers have told me something I didn’t want to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself and tell them off.

One day in the English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual. I said ever so nicely, “Nathaniel, would you be quiet?” Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted, “Nathaniel, shut up!”

For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.

“At last I don’t have an ugly lazy eye like you!” I shouted. I knew it would hurt his feelings and shut him up.

What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab(抓住)me as he shouted, “That’s it! That’s it!”

Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.

Later on, we were taken to principal’s office. There, principal told us to discuss the matter. It wasn’t until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically(身体上), the wounds eventually heal(become healthy again). But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain never goes away. At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel.

When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying(祈祷). I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me and he’ll tell me when to keep my mouth closed.

52. The underline words “them” means Robert’s ______.

B. Nathaniel never talked to himself in class.

C. Robert felt sorry for talking too much in class.

D. Nathaniel said sorry to Robert for hurting him.

54. In the passage the writer tries to tell us that _______.

A. when you hurt someone physically, the pain never goes away

B. we should try to understand and help each other in class

C. we should keep paying and asking God to help us

D. words cause (引起) more pain than violence (暴力).

55. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. At the very beginning, Robert didn’t say bad words to Nathaniel.

B. Robert didn’t regret that he said bad words to Nathaniel.

Do you have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering “yes ” or “no” to these questions:

a) Do you move your lips when reading silently?

b) Do you point to words with your finger as you read?

c) Do you move your head from side to side as you read?

d) Do you read one word at a time?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once to break the habits. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then when your lips move, you will know it and stop them. If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin in one hand, and hold your head still.

If you read no more than one or two words at a time, you need to work in learning to take in more words at each glance as your eyes travel across the lines of words. Even if you read fairly fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in several groups and force your eyes along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will be able to read faster.

56. You must _____ those habits that we are talking about in this reading.

A. remember B. get rid of (摆脱) C. have D. keep

57. You may hold your finger over your lips while reading so as to _____.

A. hold a piece of paper between

B. keep yourself from talking to others

C. tell others to be silent

D. feel whether your lips move or not

58 When your eyes travel across the lines of words, you need to ____.

A. read the words out B. look at every word carefully

C. read several words at a time D. remember every word

59. If you can read fairly fast now, ______.

A. you don’t need to learn to read faster

B. you can go on reading like that

C. you can learn to read even faster

D. you can enjoy reading

60. From this passage, we can conclude that ______

A. bad reading habits would slow your reading

B. Do point to words with your finger while reading

C. Taking in more words at each glance is a bad habit.

D. The secret of fast reading is to move your lips quickly.
