Dear editor,

I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city. There are so many colorful peacocks(孔雀) here.

The peacocks mostly live on the grass land of Dongfeng Square. The are given food freely by visitors. They usually throw food to them, and don’t think about at all whether the food is right or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.

I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds, but don’t realize the they may be doing them harm(伤害).

The visitors should be told that what they have done is very harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening.

Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Donggfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it’s our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully.

Yours

Sun Yan

How old is “old’? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. At the beginning of the 20th century, the average life span(平均寿命) was 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is still thought young.

So, how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all kinds of people: “You are as old (or young) as you feel.”” Your age simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you’ve lived.

“Nobody grows old by living a number of years,” wrote a writer. “People grow old when they don’t have their ideals(理想).” People shouldn’t have the wrong ideas about aging. Sometimes, older minds can be as bright as young minds. Alice Brophy once said, “It makes me unhappy when people say, ‘you look young for your age.’ What does that mean? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”

A. Can older people be as bright as young people? B. What tells you how well you’ve lived?

C. How old is “old”? D. What is the average life span today?

5.The passage is mainly about_______.

A. the average life span B. aging

C. the 20th century D. older people and young people

In Britain you’re allowed(答应) to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special(not common) two-year-driving LICENCE before you can start. When you’re learning, someone with a full licence always has to be in the car with you because you aren’t allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don’t have to go to a driving school---a friend can teach you. The person with you isn’t allowed to take money for the lesson if he hasn’t got a teacher’s licence.

Before you’re allowed to have a full licence, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be right for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don’t pass the test, you’re allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970s a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you’ve passed your test, you don’t have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like it, if you are healthy. Britain’s oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.

Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a licence. But they didn’t have to take a test until 1935. In the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren’t allowed to go faster than four miles(=1,609 kilometers) an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.

1.which of the following is not necessary for a young man who want to drive a car alone?
A. He should reach the age of 17 B. He should learn to drive in a driving school

C. He should get a special two-year driving licence

D. He should pass a driving test to get a full licence

2.A person can’t take money for driving lessons if he _____

A. has not learned to drive in a driving school B. doesn’t have a full driving licence

C. doesn’t have a full licence and a teacher’s licence

D. is not given a special two-year driving licence

3.In the driving test, one _____

A. must drive his own car, and it must be right for the road.

B. has to be examined only in car driving skill(技巧)

C. must drive around for more than an hour D. is usually asked to drive on roads for some time.

4.Which of the following is not true?

A. There is no limit(限度) to the age of an old man who drives a car.

B. One can take a driving test again and again until he passes it

C. A car driver didn’t have to get a licence until 1935

D. There was a speed(速度) limit to cars before 1878

5.The best Title(标题) for the passage is _____.

A. Tests for British People B. Driving licence in Britain

C. British car drivers D. Young men’s driving licence
